Programme Overview

The Don Bosco Centre at Yelagiri Hills stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Fr. Guezou, founder of the Salesian Society, despite his passing on January 29th, 2009. Governed by the Salesian Provincial of Chennai, the centre embodies the mission of Don Bosco and Fr. Guezou, fostering a dynamic atmosphere throughout its campus. In 2014, the Department of English emerged from the English Training Centre, transitioning into a separate undergraduate program affiliated with Thiruvalluvar University. Since then, the department has been dedicated to serving deserving students, successfully aligning with the college's vision and mission. Further committing to research and innovation. Its primary focus remains on nurturing students into proficient communicators in English and fostering a deep appreciation for literature to aid in their career advancement. Through various literary-based activities, the department continually enhances students' language proficiency and literary understanding. Currently offering undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in English Literature. Annually, the department maintains a commendable 91% pass rate in university examinations. Following the completion of their undergraduate degrees, most students choose to pursue master's degrees or prepare for competitive exams. Conversely, postgraduate students commonly enter the workforce, although some opt to enrol in research programs to advance their academic pursuits. It offers a diverse range of extracurricular activities, including literary workshops, guest lectures, and literary festivals (i.e. Bos Lit), to further enrich students' academic experiences. Moreover, the department actively collaborates with local communities and organizations to promote literacy and cultural exchange, reflecting its dedication to social and cultural empowerment. Furthermore, the department continually updates its curriculum to align with industry trends and global standards, ensuring that students are equipped with relevant skills and knowledge for the modern workforce. Through its research initiatives and partnerships with industry leaders, the department facilitates opportunities for students to engage in cutting-edge research and innovation, thereby preparing them for leadership roles in academia, industry, and beyond.

PROGRAM EDUCATION OBJECTIVES (PEO) 

  • OB1: EDUCATION - The graduate will be able to continue higher studies in the field of Literature and Language. 
  • OB2: TECHNOLOGY - Graduates will utilize digital resources and technologies for literary analysis, research, and communication, adapting to emerging trends in digital scholarship and online publishing. 
  • OB3: RESEARCH - Graduates will engage in research activities to explore literary themes, trends, and movements, contributing to the advancement of knowledge in the field of English language and literature. 
  • OB4: ETHICAL AND PROFESSIONAL GROWTH - The graduate will be able to articulating one’s own value system  and live by the values in life and in one’s profession 

 

PROGRAM OUTCOMES (PO) 

1. Problem Solving:Ability to use appropriate knowledge and skills to identify, formulate, analyze, and solve  problems related to Technology, Life and Career.  

2. Individual and Team work: Ability to work effectively as a member and leader in a team, preferably in any  setting. 

3. Communication skills: Ability to communicate within the profession and with society at large. Such abilities include reading, writing, speaking, listening, the ability to comprehend and write effective reports and  documents.  

4. Professionalism: Understand the professional ethics and apply the same for public and the public interest. 

5. Ethics and equity: Ability to apply ethics, accountability, and equity in all dealings.

6. Life-long learning: Ability to identify and to address one’s educational needs in the changing world in ways sufficient to maintain one’s competence and to allow him/her to contribute to the advancement of selected domains. 

 

 

Program Specific Outcomes (PSO)

  • PSO1: Literary Proficiency Upon completing the program, students will have a22 demonstrated ability to apply their comprehensive literary knowledge to analyze, interpret, and critique a wide range of literary works, including novels, poetry, drama, and essays, across various historical periods and cultural contexts.
  • PSO2: Critical Thinking and Literary Analysis Graduates will develop advanced critical thinking skills, enabling them to critically evaluate and deconstruct literary texts and critical theories. They will apply diverse critical approaches to conduct in-depth literary analysis.
  • PSO3: Effective Communication in Literature Students will be proficient in communicating their literary analyses and interpretations effectively, both in written and oral forms. They will be capable of constructing well-structured and persuasive arguments in the realm of literary studies.
  • PSO4: Proficient Literary Researchers Graduates will demonstrate research proficiency by conducting comprehensive literary research. They will locate, evaluate, and synthesize primary and secondary sources, employing appropriate research methodologies to support their literary inquiries.
  • PSO5: Cultural and Global Appreciation Alumni will have a heightened awareness of cultural diversity and global perspectives within literature. They will appreciate the cultural, historical, and societal contexts that shape literary works and recognize the global impact of literature.
  • PSO6: Commitment to Lifelong Learning Our program will instil in graduates a strong commitment to lifelong learning and ongoing professional development in the field of literature. They will actively seek opportunities to expand their literary knowledge and engage with evolving literary trends and theories. These Program Specific Outcomes are designed to provide a more focused and detailed understanding of the knowledge and skills that students will acquire as part of the undergraduate English Literature program, aligning with the broader Program Outcomes.
