Programme Overview

The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Defence and Strategic Studies is a three-year undergraduate programme committed to providing students with a broad and in-depth understanding of National Security, Defence Mechanisms and Strategic Affairs. Designed as an interdisciplinary course, it offers academic perspectives on defence management, military strategy, international relations, and the evolving dynamics of global security.

The programme enables students to explore a diverse range of subjects, including Geopolitics, Conflict Resolution, Global Security Challenges, Defence Administration, Military Psychology and Strategic Thought. It draws upon the foundational principles of Political Science, History, Sociology, Psychology and Technology, thereby offering a holistic framework for understanding security issues and strategic decision-making.

With a strong emphasis on analytical and critical thinking, the programme blends theoretical knowledge with practical insights, preparing learners for careers in Defence and Uniformed Services, Civil Services, Research Institutions, Think Tanks, Policy Analysis Bodies and Security-Related Organizations. The curriculum is designed to cultivate Leadership, Discipline, Problem-Solving Skills and a Deep Sense of National Responsibility.

By fostering intellectual curiosity and strategic awareness, the B.A. in Defence and Strategic Studies equips students to engage meaningfully in discussions on national and international security, while shaping them into informed citizens and future leaders in the field of defence and strategic affairs.

Programme Outcomes (PO)

  • PO1 – Disciplinary Knowledge with focus on Defence and Strategic Studies: Capable of demonstrating comprehensive knowledge and understanding of major concepts, theoretical principles and contemporary strategic environment in Defence & Strategic Studies and its different subfields.
  • PO2 – Skilled Communicator and Critical thinker: Ability to transmit complex information and employ critical thinking relating to national security issues in a clear and concise manner in writing and oral skills.
  • PO3 – Sense of inquiry: Capability for asking relevant/appropriate questions relating to issues and problems in the field of Defence & Strategic Studies and planning, executing and reporting the results of any issues related to national/international security.
  • PO4 – Team player / Leader: Capable of working effectively in diverse teams in both classroom, in society and real life situations.
  • PO5 – Skilled project manager: Capable of identifying/mobilizing appropriate resources required for a project, and managing a project through to completion, while observing responsible and ethical conduct.
  • PO6 – Digitally literate: Capable of using computers to understand strategies and tactics in conflicts.
  • PO7 – Ethical awareness/reasoning: Capable of embracing and demonstrating moral/ethical values in one’s work and avoiding unethical behavior such as fabrication, falsification or misrepresentation of data or committing plagiarism, and appreciating environmental and sustainability issues.
  • PO8 – Lifelong learners: Capable of self-paced and self-directed learning aimed at personal development and for improving knowledge/skill development and current affairs.

Programme Specific Outcomes (PSO)

  • PSO1: Attainment of sound knowledge about the basics that the students are expected to imbibe in the subject of Defence and Strategic Studies.
  • PSO2: Develop capability in understanding the implications of use and threat of use of force in International relations.
  • PSO3: Upon completion of the programme of Bachelor’s in Defence and Strategic Studies, a student should have acquired basic competency in strategic affairs covering a wide spectrum of interstate security to global security issues including non-kinetic dimensions.
  • PSO4: Ability to move from LOTS (Lower Order Thinking Skills) to HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills) in Defence and Strategic Studies.
  • PSO5: Inculcate a spirit of nationalism and develop good values contributing to building strong national character.
